Route 1 Reads

Route 1 Reads is a partnership between 16 East Coast affiliate state centers for the book to promote books that illuminate important aspects of their state or commonwealth for readers travelling the East Coast on this highway. 

Annually, the Council selects a work about North Carolina and/or by a North Carolina author to feature for the Route 1 Reads program. Past NC Center for the Book Route 1 Reads include:

  • 2015: Bob Garner's Book of Barbeque by Bob Garner
  • 2016: Bootlegger's Daughter by Margaret Maron
  • 2017: Dimestore by Lee Smith
  • 2018: Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
  • 2019: Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue by John Shelton Reed
