SUMMARY:Juneteenth Celebration at the Washington Waterfront Undergroudn Railraod Musuem
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum will host a series of events to celebrate Juneteenth. \n\nIt took 913 days after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation for news of the emancipation to reach the enslaved in Galveston\, Texas. In honor of that\, Leesa Jones\, curator of the Washington Waterfront Underground Museum\, will lead a walk from the museum at the corner of  Gladden and Main Streets to the site of the proposed Black History Legacy Park at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Van Norden Street. The walk is exactly 913 steps.\nJuneteenth flag raising honoring Washington’s Black United States Civil War soldiers\nDecorating the Juneteenth Celebration Tree\nChildren’s reading hour\nJuneteenth Jeopardy\, bingo\, a Juneteenth scavenger hunt and Juneteenth A to Z\n\nThe Black Oral Histories of Beaufort County will also have an information booth there to share more about the project\, with the hope of lining up additional interviews.

Katherine Calhoun Cutshall\, Manager of Buncombe County Special Collections (and SHRAB member)\, will discuss both process and content for a project to collect community memories after Hurricane Helene\, Come Hell or Highwater. Library staff created a repository for digital materials in direct response to ways they witnessed community members documenting experiences. With crowdsourcing as a central methodology for the creation of this archive\, the main goal is to offer permanence to the fleeting moments the community has captured on digital media. Register.

SUMMARY:How Do We See Ourselves in Each Other?
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural Program of the Four-Part Series “What Can Become of Us?”\nCo-presented by Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies\, Zócalo Public Square\, and Asheville Art Museum \nModerated by Tomás Jiménez\, Founding Faculty Co-Director\, Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies   \nAs people move to and around the U.S.\, they transform communities\, perhaps nowhere as strikingly as in fast-growing North Carolina. As the long-established Native\, Black\, and white citizens of the state welcome Latino and Asian newcomers into this “new Southern immigrant gateway\,” once-separated groups are building new futures together—and understanding themselves anew through the eyes of their neighbors. \nThis program is inspired by Coatlicue & Las Meninas: The Stanford Edition (2007/2025) by Mexican American artist Pedro Lasch. The piece is a 10-foot black mirror merging Diego Velázquez’s iconic painting Las Meninas (1656) and the monumental sculpture of the Mexica deity Coatlicue (1400s)\, commissioned by IAJS and on view at Asheville Art Museum from April 16 to July 13\, 2025. \nJoin us to view the artwork and hear a talk between Asheville Art Museum associate curator Jessica Orzulak and artist Pedro Lasch\, who will discuss the work’s larger themes\, including how mirrors encourage viewers to reflect on the movement of people\, ideas\, and objects across time and space. A panel moderated by Stanford IAJS founding faculty co-director Tomás Jiménez and featuring philosopher and ethicist Kwame Anthony Appiah\, immersive journalism and extended reality (XR) pioneer Nonny de la Peña\, and immigrant integration advocate Federico Rios will follow\, discussing the ways Americans\, old and new\, see ourselves in each other. \nWe invite our in-person audience to continue the conversation with the artist\, speakers\, and each other at a post-event reception with complimentary drinks\, small bites\, art-viewing\, and entertainment. \n“What Can Become of Us?” is a collaboration between the Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies (IAJS) and Zócalo Public Square\, envisioning new perspectives on migration\, America’s diverse communities\, and how people come together across differences. The year-long series activates four regions of the United States and highlights newly commissioned works of art—visual\, textile\, and dance—to inspire a national conversation through exhibitions\, public programs\, and essays\, and to work toward a better future.

SUMMARY:State and Local History Resources at the American Folklife Center
DESCRIPTION:Join staff members of the American Folklife Center (AFC) at the Library of Congress for a free virtual tour of its resources\, activities\, and research opportunities as well as guidance on how to access\, explore and utilize its vast archival collection\, much of it now available online. \nThe American Folklife Center offers an abundance of valuable resources for state and local historians. With more than 8 million items and 3\,500 collections in its archive\, the AFC is the world’s foremost repository for documentary materials on local\, state\, and regional cultural traditions\, both historic and contemporary. Its collections document traditional culture in the United States and throughout the world. \nOriginally founded at the Library in 1928\, since 1976 the AFC has been charged by Congress to “preserve and present” folklife and traditional culture in all its diversity. Over the years the Center’s staff have coordinated and conducted large scale fieldwork projects\, produced rich public programs\, supported training for researchers and fieldworkers\, provided robust reference services\, and built a significant multiformat archive that holds cultural documentation of lived human experience from around the world. \nThis webinar includes an overview of AFC holdings; introduces relevant Research Guides and approaches to research; features a short walk-through demonstrating how to use and navigate AFC online resources; and touches on related issues such as copyrights\, citing/crediting Library materials; making research appointments (online and in person); and AFC awards\, internships\, and research opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:The Education Division of the National Endowment for the Humanities fosters curricular innovation through its grant programs. For the past nine years NEH’s Humanities Connections program\, in particular\, has supported curricula connecting the humanities to non-humanities fields. As humanities programs become more interdisciplinary\, faculty must collaborate with colleagues who may share very different approaches\, both to the subject matter itself and to how that content is presented to students. \nPlease join us on January 30\, 2-4 pm EST for a virtual convening on “Collaborating Beyond the Humanities\,” focusing on the health humanities as an exemplary site of interdisciplinary collaboration. In the first hour\, speakers in the health humanities\, including former NEH project directors\, will share their perspectives on the joys\, opportunities\, and challenges of working across disciplines. In the second hour\, all participants will be invited to join breakout rooms for further discussion. \nOur speakers include: \n\nSari Altschuler (associate professor of English and founding director of the Health\, Humanities and Society Program\, Northeastern University)\nScott Muir (director of undergraduate initiatives\, National Humanities Alliance)\nVincent Punzo (professor of psychology and founder of medical humanities at Earlham College)\, and\nElizabeth Dzeng (associate professor of medicine\, University of California-San Francisco).\n\nIf you would like to attend\, please register before January 27 (see button below for link).
