SUMMARY:Women and Musical Education in the Regency Era | Kathryn Libin
DESCRIPTION:Jane Austen and other women who enjoyed music\, and who aspired to even a modest level of musical accomplishment\, needed some training. What kind of musical education could women in the Regency era expect to receive? What does it indicate that Marianne Dashwood plays concertos\, why is Mary Bennet interested in thoroughbass\, and how would Jane Fairfax have encountered the compositions of J.B. Cramer? Contemporary manuals on female education offer a glimpse into what was then considered appropriate for musical study\, and help us understand what it took for Austen\, her characters\, and the women of her time to achieve their musical goals. \nKathryn L. Libin\, Mary Conover Mellon Professor of Music at Vassar College\, earned BM and MA degrees in piano performance at the Oberlin Conservatory and New York University\, and a PhD in musicology at NYU. She has lectured and published on Mozart’s music and manuscripts\, on music in Jane Austen’s life and works\, and on musical sources in the Lobkowicz Library near Prague. Her articles on Jane Austen and music may be read in Persuasions (19\, 22\, 28\, and 46)\, in the collection Elegance\, Propriety\, Harmony: Jane Austen and the Arts (2013)\, and in the Edinburgh Companion to Jane Austen and the Arts (2024). At Vassar she teaches a course on Jane Austen and Music in the Domestic Sphere.

SUMMARY:Jane Austen's Musical Life | Gillian Dooley
DESCRIPTION:In her surviving letters\, Jane Austen mentions music occasionally among news of friends\, neighbors and family. We know that she played the piano and sang\, apparently practicing regularly when she could. The memories of relations who were still young when she died – especially her niece Caroline – give us an idea of the place of music in her daily life. There is also rich evidence in the surviving music books from the collection of Austen and her family circle\, much of which is copied in her own handwriting. \nAusten sometimes implies her dislike of public concerts and her appreciation of people who are honest about their lack of musical taste. At other times she expresses genuine enjoyment of a superior performance. Some of these attitudes are also displayed in the novels\, but there are subtleties and ambiguities in the way she uses music and musicianship in her writing to illuminate her characters and sometimes to advance her plots. In this talk\, I will discuss various aspects of music in Austen’s life and work and give some idea of the music that she played and sang. \nGillian Dooley is an Honorary Associate Professor in English at Flinders University\, South Australia. She has published and presented internationally on various topics\, including Jane Austen\, often with an emphasis on music. She was co-convenor of the ‘Immortal Austen’ conference in Adelaide\, July 2017\, and as a singer she has been curating and presenting programs of music from Austen’s personal collection since 2007. In 2021 she completed a detailed index of each of the 500-600 items in the Austen music collections digitized by University of Southampton\, and her book She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music was published by Manchester University Press in 2024.

SUMMARY:State and Local History Resources at the American Folklife Center
DESCRIPTION:Join staff members of the American Folklife Center (AFC) at the Library of Congress for a free virtual tour of its resources\, activities\, and research opportunities as well as guidance on how to access\, explore and utilize its vast archival collection\, much of it now available online. \nThe American Folklife Center offers an abundance of valuable resources for state and local historians. With more than 8 million items and 3\,500 collections in its archive\, the AFC is the world’s foremost repository for documentary materials on local\, state\, and regional cultural traditions\, both historic and contemporary. Its collections document traditional culture in the United States and throughout the world. \nOriginally founded at the Library in 1928\, since 1976 the AFC has been charged by Congress to “preserve and present” folklife and traditional culture in all its diversity. Over the years the Center’s staff have coordinated and conducted large scale fieldwork projects\, produced rich public programs\, supported training for researchers and fieldworkers\, provided robust reference services\, and built a significant multiformat archive that holds cultural documentation of lived human experience from around the world. \nThis webinar includes an overview of AFC holdings; introduces relevant Research Guides and approaches to research; features a short walk-through demonstrating how to use and navigate AFC online resources; and touches on related issues such as copyrights\, citing/crediting Library materials; making research appointments (online and in person); and AFC awards\, internships\, and research opportunities.

SUMMARY:Bartók: From Opposing Ethnic Cleansing to Inventing Ethnomusicology
DESCRIPTION:The classical composer Béla Bartók is perhaps most famous in the music world for having incorporated elements of folk music into his work\, a practice that earned him the title of “father of ethnomusicology.” However\, attitudes of ethnic elitism in Occupied Europe made it difficult for his projects to flourish there. Bartók became an outspoken critic of antisemitic laws in Hungary and fled to the US during World War II. This event presents two talks and a listening workshop that will help participants understand and appreciate the legacy of Bartók and other classical musicians who resisted antisemitism and fascism in the 1930s and 40s. Guest speakers include Dr. Amy Hudnall (Judaic\, Holocaust\, and Peace Studies)\, Dr. Jacob Kopcienski (Musicology)\, and Dr. Darci Gardner (Languages\, Literatures\, and Cultures). This event is free and open to the public. It is the kickoff event of a three-part series titled\, “Bridging the Divide between Classical Music and Folk Traditions: Béla Bartók’s Legacy\,” organized by High Country Humanities with the support of a grant from North Carolina Humanities. Attendees may use the College Street parking deck next to Belk Library free of charge from 5:00 pm until the end of the event.

SUMMARY:"Joy Cometh in the Morning": African American Symposium
DESCRIPTION:For Black History Month\, the Dr. M.T. Pope House and the City of Raleigh Museum will focus on African American Emancipation through education\, business ownership\, and civic engagement\, with academic presentations and music.  \nThe theme for the African American Symposium is “Joy Cometh in the Morning”. After the Civil War\, formally enslaved African Americans rejoiced in their newfound freedom\, but they understood that there was still work to be done. “Joy Cometh in the Morning” explores how African Americans embraced their freedom. Many expressed their liberation through music\, while others began to assert their rights as citizens. This year’s topics will include the history of Shaw University’s Leonard Medical School\, one of the first four-year medical institutions in the United States. Additionally\, there will be a focus on Black women in widowhood and their experiences navigating the government to collect widows’ pensions. Finally\, there will be an interactive performance highlighting the unrelenting joy of African Americans.  \nReserve your free tickets through Eventbrite and use code JOY to enter a giveaway for a copy of “Claiming Union Widowhood: Race\, Respectability\, and Poverty in the Post-Emancipation South” by Dr. Brandi C.
