NC Humanities Awards Community Research Grant to Historic Jarvisburg Colored School
May 2021
(May 1, 2021) CHARLOTTE, NC – North Carolina Humanities is pleased to award a $2,000 Community Research Grant to Historic Jarvisburg Colored School for their “Songlines on Site” project.
NC Humanities provides Community Research Grants of up to $2,000 to nonprofit organizations that use the humanities (literature, history, philosophy, etc.) to deepen human connections, broaden perspectives, equip communities with empathy, understanding, and respect, and inspire community across differences. Community Research Grants support the incubation or development of public humanities projects.
The Songlines project began with NC Humanities funding in 2019 to support research and collection of the creative, childhood daily life of Historic Jarvisburg Colored School’s African American alumni through southeastern regional songs as sung by their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and local school children. This new grant funding will support the second phase of the project which will bring the 2019 database of children’s songs to the public through an outdoor soundscape within the School’s boundaries. All who have a car radio or cellphone access to FM radio will be able to listen. “Songlines on Site” aims to preserve and celebrate North Carolina’s folkloric song and storytelling tradition and invite a larger community to participate in the Museum and county’s preservation activities.
