Over $600,000 in COVID-19 relief funding provided to North Carolina cultural organizations
January 2021
(September, 2020) CHARLOTTE, NC- We have awarded $636,767 in NC CARES: Humanities Relief Grant funding to 60 museums, libraries, historical societies, and other cultural nonprofit organizations across North Carolina.
This grant funding will directly support expenses such as staff salaries, general operating costs that support humanities programming, and the digitization of collections and resources to make them available online.
“Cultural organizations continue to be at the heart of our North Carolina communities,” said Sherry Paula Watkins, Executive Director of North Carolina Humanities. “By listening and responding to community needs, especially now, NC CARES: Humanities Relief Grants are providing organizations with funds to share stories and experiences as a way to express, reflect, deepen understanding, and connect with others,” Watkins continued. “As a grant-maker committed to serving our communities, North Carolina Humanities is honored to have awarded the entirety of our CARES Act funding amount to 60 diverse cultural organizations, from the coast to the mountains.”
NC CARES: Humanities Relief Grant funding was provided to North Carolina Humanities by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed by Congress in late March 2020. The $2.2 trillion CARES package included $75 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities, nearly $30 million, or a total of 40%, of which was sent to the state and jurisdictional humanities councils, including North Carolina Humanities, to distribute to local cultural nonprofits and programming. North Carolina Humanities is a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
NC CARES: Humanities Relief Grant award amount tiers ranged from $5,000-$20,000 based upon an organizational budget with priority being given to eligible organizations located in or serving rural communities, organizations serving traditionally under-resourced groups, and organizations that do not receive significant public funding. These grants were over and above North Carolina Humanities’ normal grant funding opportunities. Organizations seeking additional support are encouraged to apply for one of our regular public humanities programming grants at www.nchumanities.org
