North Carolina Humanities joins the nation in observing Pride Month! This month, and every month, NC Humanities works to celebrate and uplift histories, stories, and cultures of all North Carolinians. We invite you to read the below resources that explore and pay tribute to Pride Month. This is just a short collection of the amazing resources that are available. We encourage our readers to explore beyond what we’ve listed.
- Stories are important! Explore collections from Invisible Histories and the Blue Ridge Pride LGBTQIA+ Archive as well as upcoming events from CharlOz. NC Humanities has supported various Blue Ridge Pride community-based workshops and Invisible Histories’ 2024 Queer History South Conference. This September, make sure to check out the NC Humanities-supported CharlOz festival.
- Re-watch NC Humanities’ North Carolina Reads discussion about Pauli Murray: A Personal and Political Life with the author and the Pauli Murray Center.
- Read the National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH)Virtual Bookshelf, featuring a selection of NEH-funded projects and resources related to LGBTQ+ history.
- On the NEH bookshelf you’ll find more about the Annotated Anthology of Newspaper Columns of Politician and Activist Harvey Milk (1930-1978) from scholar Jason Black of UNC Charlotte and Pride! of the Community from UNC Greensboro.
- Search through the Library of Congress’ resources that tell rich and diverse stories of LGBTQ+ life in America and around the world.
- Join the Smithsonian in commemorating Pride Month with events, resources, and podcast episodes that tell a diversity of Pride stories.
