2025 Fellowship Recipient Announced

North Carolina Humanities has awarded a 2025 summer Fellowship to Dr. Amy Vetter, Professor at UNC Greensboro for her research project “The Writing Lives of Teens.” This research project explores several humanities issues particularly in education, literacy studies, and the evolving nature of communication in the digital age.

As Dr. Amy Vetter states “This project recognizes the evolving nature of writing in the digital age and the gap between traditional classroom practices and contemporary writing realities.” Through qualitative methods, including surveys and interviews, the study seeks to answer questions about teens’ writing practices, content creation, audience engagement, and their evolving methods of expressing themselves. The research will be led by experienced researchers and writing teacher educators with the goal of bridging the gap between students’ writing lives and classroom instruction. By emphasizing teens’ voices and experiences, the research will inform curriculum design and teacher practices to better align with students’ needs and capabilities.

“We are excited to continue serving scholars through our second year of this summer Fellowship program by supporting humanities research in NC” said NC Humanities Executive Director Sherry Paula Watkins.

In 2024 NC Humanities launched its inaugural summer Fellowship program for faculty and staff working at institutes of higher education in North Carolina. The program is designed to allow recipients the opportunity to step away from their busy workloads and complete or further humanities research projects in June-July.
