North Carolina Humanities joins the nation in observing Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month this May! Throughout the year, we work to celebrate and uplift histories, stories, and cultures of all North Carolinians.
In recognition of this cultural heritage month, we are giving away one copy of ‘Ohana Means Family by Ilima Loomis and illustrated by Kenard Pak. Join the family, or ohana, as they farm taro for poi to prepare for a traditional luau celebration. The backmatter includes a glossary of Hawaiian terms used, as well as an author’s note. - Learn about the The Hmong Heritage Project, an NEH grant supported community digitization days and related public programming to capture the memories and artifacts of Hmong community members in Catawba County, NC, home to the fourth largest population of Hmong immigrants in the U.S.
